Looking for a cultural dining experience? As the name implies Ethiopian Down Under in Pearce serves delicious Ethiopian food that is spicy and hot – but not hot! This may seem like a contradiction but Ethiopian food is a unique cuisine with spices that emphasise flavour and not heat. Unlike Indian or Thai food, it does not burn and is not an endurance test - the Ethiopians leave that to their famous long distance runners! Like most national cuisines, Ethiopian food varies from region to region. Ethiopian Down Under food has its origins in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

The award winning Ethiopia Down Under restaurant is a professional member of the NSW/ACT Coeliac Society, and their menu has gluten free dishes marked on it. There are numerous options to choose from, with nearly all of the main meals being gluten free. Desserts include ice cream and sorbets (vegan and dairy free). The menu is available on Ethiopia Down Under’s website (click link on this page). BYO drinks are permitted and no corkage is charged.

While the kitchen is not strictly halal or kosher, Ethiopians follow similar dietary restrictions and no pork or seafood products are used in the kitchen or in any of the food purchased.

Ethiopia is the birthplace of all coffee. An added feature of the restaurant is the daily hand roasting of raw Ethiopian coffee beans, with authentic spiced Ethiopian coffee served from a traditional coffee pot. Unlike Italian or Turkish coffee, Ethiopian coffee is neither bitter or thick. It has a smooth, pleasant taste, sweet to the palette and the Sidamo fair trade coffee is lower in caffeine than most coffees and teas.

Ethiopia Down Under won the 2006 Restaurant and Catering Association of NSW/ACT restaurant award, and has been nominated and finalists on many occasions, including 2009.
